Invitation to Gratitude

Invitation to Gratitude

A Lenten Practice

Invitation to Gratitude

In these dark and troubled times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. The noise of the world can crowd out our awareness of quiet grace.

During Lent we often give something up.
This year, I invite you to take something on.

Consider keeping a kind of gratitude journal — not only privately, but gently shared. For each day of Lent (or as often as you can), make a small gratitude post on Facebook and tag our parish page so others may encounter the hope you experienced.

Take one photo of something beautiful you notice in your day — the way afternoon light rests in a room, the shape of a tree against the sky — or write one sentence about a warm interaction with a stranger, or simply name something you are grateful for.

In a season that leads us through reflection toward resurrection, we practice noticing that the transforming light of Epiphany and Transfiguration is as work in the world, all around us. And sometimes the smallest witness becomes someone else’s doorway to hope.

How to tag the church page

  1. Start a post on Facebook.
  2. In your text, type @stmarysmetchosin (you may also want to add a few hashtags such as #Lent #gratitude)
  3. Tap the correct page when it appears (it will turn blue).
  4. Set the audience to Public so others can see it.
  5. Post.

Invitation to Community

Invitation to Community

Greetings Beloved Community,

In my sermon last Sunday January 18, I reflected on the moment when the first disciples asked, “Where are you staying?” Their question was not merely about a roof over their heads; it was a yearning for a place of belonging, a desire to dwell with the One who calls them. Jesus answered not with a map, but with an invitation: “Come and see.” That invitation is about relationship. It is about abiding—staying close enough, long enough, for love to shape us and for grace to take flesh in ordinary, faithful ways. Discipleship, as we reflected together on January 18, is not first about having everything figured out. It is about showing up. Remaining. Offering what we have, trusting that God’s steadfast love and faithfulness—ḥesed and ʾemet—are already at work among us.

As we prepare for our Annual Vestry Meeting, I want to invite you into a time of prayerful discernment. Not pressure. Not obligation. But a gentle listening for how God might be calling you to serve the shared life of this parish we love.

Pastoral Visits

Pastoral Visits

Thursday, February 19, 2026

One of the beautiful gifts of parish life is simply being together — not only on Sundays, but in living rooms, kitchens, hospital rooms, and over cups of coffee or tea. To make space for that, Parish Council has increased my time slightly to allow one dedicated day each month for pastoral visits in Metchosin and the surrounding area. This will take place on the third Thursday of each month.

These visits are not only for times of crisis. They are for making connections, building relationships, and hearing the stories that shape your life and faith. If you would welcome conversation, prayer, or companionship — whether you are celebrating, struggling, wondering, or just wanting to talk — I would be glad to come. The easiest way to arrange for a visit is to use this link: https://calendly.com/lmills-bc/60min. However, I’m happy to use an exchange of emails if you’d prefer.

I look forward to sitting with you and listening well.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Lynn Mills

Rite of Reconciliation AKA Confession

Rite of Reconciliation AKA Confession

Thursday, February 19, 2026

Within the Anglican tradition, the Rite of Reconciliation or Confession offers a concrete way to step into God’s presence with honesty. It has often been described this way: all may, none must, some should. It is invitation, not compulsion In this sacramental moment, a penitent speaks truthfully before God in the presence of a priest. Naming sin aloud breaks isolation. Sharing brings clarity. What once felt frightening becomes a place of encounter. Then comes absolution — not vague reassurance, but a declared forgiveness grounded in Christ’s saving work. The priest speaks Christ’s promise: you are forgiven. Holiness and mercy meet. Truth and tenderness embrace. Often there is counsel, sometimes a simple act of prayer or restitution, and a mysterious healing and release. The Rite proclaims that God’s glory does not annihilate; it transforms. What feels like devouring fire becomes refining light. As Lent approaches, this sacramental gift stands before us as a pathway from fear to freedom.

Another really helpful tool is is the first Five Steps of the 12-Step Program. For more information see my sermon on February 15 Here.

As I’ve said before, the Spirit is not so much cleansing us from impurity as she is irrigating our wounds. Wounds inflicted on us by ourselves, our own sins, and wounds inflicted on us by others. Richard Rohr says that we are punished by our sins rather than punished for our sins. There is deep wisdom in that. Sin can be considered as anything which causes harm to others or ourselves.

James 5:16 tells us “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.” There is this wonderful line from the Gospel of Thomas where Jesus says “If you bring forth that which is within you, it will save you. If you do not bring it forth, it will destroy you.” (Quote 70) When human beings “admit” to one another “the exact nature of our wrongs,” we invariably have a human and humanizing encounter that deeply enriches—and even changes lives—often forever! It is not an exercise to achieve moral purity, or regain God’s love, but in fact a direct encounter with God’s love. Only love effects true inner transformation, not duress, guilt, shunning, or social pressure. Love is not love unless it is totally free. Grace is not grace unless it is totally free.

So I invite you beloved community to use this period of Lent to use the Rite of Reconciliation and the 5 steps to lay your burdens down and receive healing, restoration and transformation.

I will be available to hear confession on the following dates:
Ash Wednesday Feb 18th at the historic Church from 4 pm to 5:15 pm
Thursday Feb. 19th, during Pastoral Visits (for more information see the Pastoral Visits Events)
Thursday March 12th, during Pastoral Visits
Thursday March 19th, during Pastoral Visits
Sunday March 22nd, after service. 11:30 to 12:30

Annual Vestry Meeting

Annual Vestry Meeting

Sunday, February 22, 2026

Notice is hereby given that a meeting of the parishioners of this parish will be held on the 22nd day of February at 11:30 am in the sanctuary of St. Mary of the Incarnation for the purpose of presenting the 2026 budget for approval and electing members to parish council and lay delegate to synod.

All are welcome to attend.
In order to vote at the meeting, one must be a parishioner of at least 16 years of age and have been in regular attendance at a church in the diocese for a period of three months immediately preceding the meeting, unless unable to attend due to health or other reasonable causes. (Note: One cannot be a voting member of more than one parish.) An elector who is unable to attend a meeting in person may in writing appoint another elector to attend and vote on their behalf by proxy, provided that no elector may hold more than one proxy at any meeting. A proxy is valid only for the one meeting to which it refers.

Please prayerfully consider nominating someone to serve on parish council, this includes yourselves. Parish Council should be between three and twelve members in addition to the ex-officio members (Clergy, Wardens, Treasurer and Secretary).

Positions on council for nomination and election include:

We are grateful for those who currently serve, and we are also aware that God is always calling new voices, new hands, new hearts into the work of beloved community. Some of these roles are visible; many are quiet and faithful. All of them matter. Many hands make community. In the coming year, we are especially seeking people who feel called to:

  • Parish Council – to pray, listen, discern, and help shape the life and mission of St. Mary’s with wisdom, patience, and love. We are looking for a minimum of three additional members of Parish Council. You can find the Guide for Parish Council HERE:
  • Wardens – to share in the stewardship of our parish’s well-being, caring for its people, property, and resources in collaboration and trust. Both Blaine and Joel are stepping down, and we are seeking two new wardens. Please note that Blaine wears at least 5 hats in our parish, so don’t think that the Warden’s role is everything that Blaine does! I know that’s a strange word, but it comes from hundreds of years of history. The word “warden” comes from the Old English weardian, meaning to guard, watch over, or keep safe. From its earliest use, a warden was someone entrusted with care, oversight, and protection rather than command or control. In Anglicanism, this preserved a distinctive balance:
    • Clergy were responsible for spiritual leadership and sacramental life
    • Wardens were responsible for the temporal and communal life of the parish
    • Both were accountable to the bishop

This balance is sometimes described as “mixed governance”—a system that honours ordained ministry while affirming the vital leadership of the laity.  You can find the Warden’s Handbook HERE.

  • Lay Delegate to Synod (nominated and elected by the parish): This role joins the biannual synod meeting and represents the parish, voting on their behalf. They are permitted but not required to attend parish council and have voting rights at council.
  • Alternative Lay Delegate to Synod: (nominated and elected by the parish): In the event that the elected Lay Delegate is unable to attend synod.

Positions appointed include:

Treasurer (appointed by the incumbent and churchwardens with the consent of the parish council): This role is currently filled by Jane Hammond who has agreed to stay on for 2026.

Metchosin Challenge

How Big Issues have Changed in Current Times - Tuesday, February 24, 2026

Please see the image at the botton of the event on the website to share on your social media sites! Thank you!

St Mary’s Metchosin has, for the 10th year, put together a Lenten Challenge. It is called the Metchosin Challenge. It is a challenge from St Mary’s church to all the community to live better by being more aware of the issues facing our world, so we can be empowered to act to make our world a better place. This Challenge is in the form of a speaker series designed for a general audience on a wide range of topics. We have had speakers such as Elizabeth May, Andy Mackinnon, Wally Eamer, and Herbert O’ Driscol. Each year we have had a theme. The first year it was Big Issues Facing the World. In the following years we tackled such topics as Climate Change, Native Relations, Species Diversity, Human Rights Issues, Empower People for Action, Little Things That You Can Do to Make a Difference, Hope in a Changing World, Embracing Change, What Are Children Worrying About,  Issues in Our Own Health.

Last year, for the first time, we held a non-secular topic, Exploring Modern Religion.

This year we will be revisiting our first year's topic of, Big Issues Facing the World, with a slightly different slant of, How Big Issues have Changed in Current Times.

The Metchosin Challenge Series will begin Tuesday, February 24 from 7:00-8:30 and will run every Tuesday until the end of March.

Feb 24th Rev. Wally Eamer: Rupture - Individual Rights, Identity and Collective Action
March 3rd MP Elizabeth May: Climate Change
March 10th Dr. Andy MacKinnon: Endangered Species and Ecosystems 2026
March 17th Dr. Jamie Lawson: Threats to what we thought we had protected.
March 24th Dr. Penny Bryden: Changes to power structure in Canada and Democracy
March 31st Michael Polanyi: The Effective Resistance
