Invitation to Lament & Gratitude

Invitation to Lament & Gratitude

Invitation to Lament & Gratitude

A few weeks ago, I wrote a news post on an Invitation to Gratitude. This week I feel the urge to nuance that. While I still encourage a practice of a gratitude journal during Lent, I now encourage you to add a practice of lament. This is not a case of either/or. It is both/and. If we only express gratitude we can push away, deny, and spiritually bypass the grief we are experiencing. And boy, it doesn’t take much effort to find reasons to grieve. War stretches on in places that once felt far away and now feel heartbreakingly close, especially for beloved members of our community. Political rhetoric grows sharper and more divisive. The earth groans under fires, floods, and storms. Many carry private sorrows as well: illness, loss, strained relationships, anxiety about the future. We do not have to manufacture lament. It rises naturally to our lips.

Scripture gives us permission to let it rise. The prophet Book of Jeremiah dares to say, “My joy is gone, grief is upon me, my heart is sick.” And astonishingly, God answers not with scolding, but with shared sorrow: “For the hurt of my poor people I am hurt.” In Psalm 79 the community cries, “How long, O Lord?” Lament is not a failure of faith. It is faith telling the truth. It is love refusing to look away from suffering.

Lent is a season spacious enough to hold that truth. We often think of Lent as a time to give something up. This year, perhaps we might practice a both/and faith. Both lament and gratitude. Both naming what is broken and noticing what is beautiful. Both crying out “How long?” and whispering “Thank you.”

Gratitude is not denial. It is defiance. Through the prophet Book of Isaiah God speaks into a devastated landscape: “Be glad and rejoice forever.” That is not naïveté. It is trust in a Creator who makes newness out of rubble. To rejoice forever is to keep finding reasons for gratitude even in grief, to keep trusting that God’s creative energy is still at work in the ruins. That is resurrection-shaped joy.

So here is an amended Lenten invitation.

Keep a simple gratitude journal. Each day, or as often as you can, take a photo of something that catches the light — the way afternoon sun rests on a table, the silhouette of a tree against the sky. Or write one sentence about a kindness received, a moment of quiet, a breath of beauty. And at the same time, do not silence your lament. Pray it. Write it in your own personal psalm of lament. Bring it to worship. Let the tears come when they need to come. Our God is not distant from anguish. In Christ, God has entered it. By the Spirit, God groans within us still.

Lent leads us toward the cross, but it also leads us toward an empty tomb. The path is not either/or. It is both/and. We grieve what is broken in our world, and we practice seeing where grace is already stirring. We name injustice, and we look for signs of renewal. We tell the truth about suffering, and we refuse to surrender hope.

In these dark and troubled times, this may be one of the most faithful things we can do: lament honestly, give thanks intentionally, and trust that even now the Holy One is at work, quietly, creatively, lovingly, in the ruins.

Yours in Christ,

Lynn

How Big Issues have Changed in Current Times - Tuesday, March 10, 2026

Please see the attached image to share on your social media sites! Thank you!

St Mary’s Metchosin has, for the 10th year, put together a Lenten Challenge. It is called the Metchosin Challenge. It is a challenge from St Mary’s church to all the community to live better by being more aware of the issues facing our world, so we can be empowered to act to make our world a better place. This Challenge is in the form of a speaker series designed for a general audience on a wide range of topics. We have had speakers such as Elizabeth May, Andy Mackinnon, Wally Eamer, and Herbert O’ Driscol. Each year we have had a theme. The first year it was Big Issues Facing the World. In the following years we tackled such topics as Climate Change, Native Relations, Species Diversity, Human Rights Issues, Empower People for Action, Little Things That You Can Do to Make a Difference, Hope in a Changing World, Embracing Change, What Are Children Worrying About,  Issues in Our Own Health.

Last year, for the first time, we held a non-secular topic, Exploring Modern Religion.

This year we will be revisiting our first year's topic of, Big Issues Facing the World, with a slightly different slant of, How Big Issues have Changed in Current Times.

The Metchosin Challenge Series will begin Tuesday, February 24 from 7:00-8:30 and will run every Tuesday until the end of March.

Feb 24th Rev. Wally Eamer: Rupture - Individual Rights, Identity and Collective Action
March 3rd MP Elizabeth May: Climate Change
March 10th Dr. Andy MacKinnon: Endangered Species and Ecosystems 2026
March 17th Dr. Jamie Lawson: Threats to what we thought we had protected.
March 24th Dr. Penny Bryden: Changes to power structure in Canada and Democracy

Pastoral Visits

Pastoral Visits

Thursday, March 12, 2026

One of the beautiful gifts of parish life is simply being together — not only on Sundays, but in living rooms, kitchens, hospital rooms, and over cups of coffee or tea. To make space for that, Parish Council has increased my time slightly to allow one dedicated day each month for pastoral visits in Metchosin and the surrounding area. This will take place on the third Thursday of each month.

These visits are not only for times of crisis. They are for making connections, building relationships, and hearing the stories that shape your life and faith. If you would welcome conversation, prayer, or companionship — whether you are celebrating, struggling, wondering, or just wanting to talk — I would be glad to come. The easiest way to arrange for a visit is to use this link: https://calendly.com/lmills-bc/60min. However, I’m happy to use an exchange of emails if you’d prefer.

I look forward to sitting with you and listening well.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Lynn Mills

Rite of Reconciliation AKA Confession

Rite of Reconciliation AKA Confession

Thursday, March 12, 2026

Within the Anglican tradition, the Rite of Reconciliation or Confession offers a concrete way to step into God’s presence with honesty. It has often been described this way: all may, none must, some should. It is invitation, not compulsion In this sacramental moment, a penitent speaks truthfully before God in the presence of a priest. Naming sin aloud breaks isolation. Sharing brings clarity. What once felt frightening becomes a place of encounter. Then comes absolution — not vague reassurance, but a declared forgiveness grounded in Christ’s saving work. The priest speaks Christ’s promise: you are forgiven. Holiness and mercy meet. Truth and tenderness embrace. Often there is counsel, sometimes a simple act of prayer or restitution, and a mysterious healing and release. The Rite proclaims that God’s glory does not annihilate; it transforms. What feels like devouring fire becomes refining light. As Lent approaches, this sacramental gift stands before us as a pathway from fear to freedom.

Another really helpful tool is is the first Five Steps of the 12-Step Program. For more information see my sermon on February 15 Here.

As I’ve said before, the Spirit is not so much cleansing us from impurity as she is irrigating our wounds. Wounds inflicted on us by ourselves, our own sins, and wounds inflicted on us by others. Richard Rohr says that we are punished by our sins rather than punished for our sins. There is deep wisdom in that. Sin can be considered as anything which causes harm to others or ourselves.

James 5:16 tells us “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.” There is this wonderful line from the Gospel of Thomas where Jesus says “If you bring forth that which is within you, it will save you. If you do not bring it forth, it will destroy you.” (Quote 70) When human beings “admit” to one another “the exact nature of our wrongs,” we invariably have a human and humanizing encounter that deeply enriches—and even changes lives—often forever! It is not an exercise to achieve moral purity, or regain God’s love, but in fact a direct encounter with God’s love. Only love effects true inner transformation, not duress, guilt, shunning, or social pressure. Love is not love unless it is totally free. Grace is not grace unless it is totally free.

So I invite you beloved community to use this period of Lent to use the Rite of Reconciliation and the 5 steps to lay your burdens down and receive healing, restoration and transformation.

I will be available to hear confession on the following dates:
Ash Wednesday Feb 18th at the historic Church from 4 pm to 5:15 pm
Thursday Feb. 19th, during Pastoral Visits (for more information see the Pastoral Visits Events)
Thursday March 12th, during Pastoral Visits
Thursday March 19th, during Pastoral Visits
Sunday March 22nd, after service. 11:30 to 12:30
